The following course will be given by Dr. Bipin Indurkhya at Bogazici
University this summer. Dr. Indurkhya obtained his PhD from Univ. of
Massachusetts Amherst, with Michael Arbib as the supervisor, in 1984.
He is a professor and the head of the Cognitive Science Lab at
International Institute of Information Technology, Gachibowli,
Hyderabad. He has held visiting positions in Bulgaria, Germany, the
Netherlands, USA and Japan. For more information, see

PHIL487.01: SP.TP.PHILOSOPHY OF COGNITIVE SCIENCE (3 Credits)

Course Description: In recent years, there have been many advances in
the field of Cognitive Science — mostly from the direction of
neuroscience, but also from the directions of psychology and computer
science — that have raised new philosophical questions or shed new
light on old philosophical questions. The aim of this course is
examine some of these issues. Topics to be discussed include: 1) Art
and authenticity, 2) Who is the real “self”? 3) Free will and
consciousness, 4) Body, mind and extended mind: view from cognitive
robotics, 5) Action and perception, 6) Rationality, reasoning and
creativity, 7) Legal implications of neuroscience, and so on. The
course also aims to teach critical reading and analytic thinking:
making useful distinctions, formulating and articulating arguments,
critiquing arguments, and so on. A main objective is to facilitate
your own thinking through classic and contemporary read
